plus some other gobbldy gook. same after a reinstall, and again! same thing. now this can seemingly be a issue if you installed another pro app, in my case Final Cut Express. after a lot of searching around, swearing and getting frustrated I found a workaround.

Move the aperture app from the Applications folder to another location. download the 30 day trial from apple, once installed replace the trial Aperture app with the App store one. Voila! a working installation of Aperture.

Here I thought the app store was there to make things easy… pffft!

The first virus that could infect MS-DOS based computers turns 25

Some info from the Register

The Brain Virus, written by Pakistani brothers Basit and Amjad Alvi, was relatively harmless. The Alvis claimed the malware was there as a copyright protection measure to protect their medical software from piracy, an article by CIO magazine on the anniversary recalls.

Brain replaced the boot sector of an infected floppy disk with malicious code, moving the real boot sector to another part of the disc. The malware had the effect of slowing down disk access and, more rarely, making some disks unusable.

Any other floppies used on a machine while the virus was in memory would get infected, but the malware did not copy itself to hard disk drives

disks usually have five kilobytes of bad sectors. The disk label is changed to ©Brain, and the following text can be seen in infected boot sectors:

Welcome to the Dungeon © 1986 Brain & Amjads (pvt) Ltd VIRUS_SHOE RECORD V9.0 Dedicated to the dynamic memories of millions of viruses who are no longer with us today – Thanks GOODNESS!! BEWARE OF THE er..VIRUS : this program is catching program follows after these messages….$#@%$@!!

My main computer is a Macbook Pro, has been for well over a year that said I still use my old PC mainly for MSN, ScummVM, Mame and some other nerdy stuff. The PC is running Windows XP all the latest updates ect… But one thing bugged me, every so often I get this message

“To free up disk space outlook express can compact message”

I have never used Lookout Express, never had never will Pretty sure I even removed it. Turns out this happens if you install the Windows Search until (don’t its awful) anyhoo here is a fix

Fire up Regedit.

Locate this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlo ok Express\5.0 (the GUID will be a long random string)

In the right-hand pane, double-click “Compact Check Count”, then change the value to zero

Reboot

Probably useless to anyone now for this ageing operating system, but hey may help someone. and serve as a reminder when I reinstall. that said I think this PC is on its last legs.
